Thailand One-Stop Hub for Medical Tourism & Cosmetic Surgery Seekers

The medical tourism market in Thailand is ‘in the pink’, with global industry revenues forecast to gain strength over time and hit USD 3 trillion by 2025 according to a 2016 VISA and Oxford Economics report. With the medical tourism world market worth around USD 439 billion in 2017, that revenue is expected to rise by 25% each year over the next decade. According to professional services network, Deloitte, that rise could be closer to 35% annually.

Thailand is one of the first in line enjoying a big slice of that healthy-looking pie, while Middle Eastern medical tourism is happily serving it up as the country’s top source market. Ditthakorn Wongsuk is from Bangkok-based Urban Beauty Thailand; an agency offering a free service facilitating treatment for patients by linking them up with hospitals and clinics and looking after their needs during their stay. She reveals that one of the growing attractions for health services in Thailand is the high quality.

“There are over 60 Joint Commission International (JCI) accredited private hospitals and clinics in Thailand and many of these also have JCI certification for specialist treatments from hip surgery to cancer treatments. US-board-certified doctors, world-class surgeons and state-of-the-art facilities at hospitals such as Bumrungrad International, Samitivej, Bangkok Hospital and the BNH as well as the largest healthcare group in Thailand, Bangkok Dusit Medical Service,s combine to create advanced medical care. The result is a noticeable increase in the number of patients seeking treatments from the Middle East, as well as from Australia, Europe and the US, with China set to be a big boom market here too.”

Medical tourism figures are certainly rising and in the 2016-2017 Global Buyers Survey, which looks at trends and habits of medical travellers, some 50% of patients of facilitators and agencies surveyed were from and resided in the Middle East. Aside from high-quality procedures, other plus points increasingly appeal to this discerning market.

“Advances in technology and more powerful equipment means many procedures can be carried out with quicker recovery rates or even as an outpatient,” highlights Ditthakorn. “Many of my Middle Eastern patients enjoy combining treatment packages with time to recuperate and relax with a more laid-back lifestyle; enjoying the sunshine, friendliness of the Thai people and the beauty of Thailand. They also want to be looked after from the moment they arrive, and we offer that level of service as well as special offers on stays with well-known hospitality brands such as Movenpick; creating a seamless experience.”

Orthopaedic, oncology, cardiovascular and cardiology procedures, as well as neurosurgery and stem-cell therapies are highly sought after. At Urban Beauty Thailand, many of the patients from the Middle East are seeking other types of treatments too.

“Thailand is renowned for being a hub for cosmetic surgery, as well as anti-aging, not just to look good but to improve cell health and energy levels too. Fat reduction using highly-specialist ultrasound equipment can sculpt the body and is popular, as is eyelid surgery. Bangkok and Phuket are famed for excellent dentistry, also favored by patients from the Middle East. At Urban Beauty Thailand we are also seeing a lot of men who want hair transplants and to deal with male-specific issues. Men are no longer seeing health tourism and cosmetic surgery as the domain of women but as a practical solution to looking and feeling better.”

When you start to compare standards against cost then Thailand becomes extremely attractive and far more affordable than Southeast Asian countries such as Singapore. Compared to the same treatments in the West or within the Middle East, Thailand can offer rates that are 40-60% less. With the trend for patients to combine several treatments in one trip, these savings can really add up.

With millions of medical tourists arriving in Thailand every year and an industry worth billions of US Dollars, the sheer volume of treatments on offer is tremendous. Tourism is still a main economic driver and this feeds into the medical tourism market as well. However, as markets and facilities rise, there is an even greater need for this medical gateway to be guarded by experienced and professional facilitators who can identify the highest quality healthcare and create those necessary value-added services such as patient touchpoints, that are expected from the Middle Eastern market.

Urban Beauty Thailand combines procedures and leisure time within competitively priced packages, with a dedicated arrival-to-departure personalised service for individuals, couples and small groups. This way, the medical tourism and cosmetic surgery facilitator, headquartered in a popular Middle Eastern enclave of Bangkok, is creating a real international, cross-cultural connection that is set to become stronger in the future and the Middle East market expands and Thailand’s healthcare benefits soar..
