Why Dublin should be your next stop in 2018

With its seamless blend of classic visitor sights, excellent social scene and the natural playgrounds of Dublin Bay and the Dublin Mountains framing it on all sides, this laidback city is an adventure in itself. Here are five reasons why Dublin should be added to your 2018 travel wish list (as recommended by National Geographic Traveler in its annual ‘Best of the World’ destination list for 2018!).

1) Tour of a Literary Paradise: Dublin’s creative outpourings are well documented in excellent museums and galleries around the city. Bygone Georgian grandeur sets the scene at the Dublin Writers Museum, which details the city’s illustrious literary traditions up to the 1970s. Dublin’s libraries are heart-stoppingly beautiful, and no literary trail would be complete without a visit to The Chester Beatty Library. Not just a library but also a museum, it includes a 16th century Quran on display, one of the oldest in the world.

2) Embark on an Irish Culinary Adventure: Experience a slice of Ireland in the heart of Dublin. The city’s finest eateries mix the best of edgy, contemporary dining with homespun, traditional fare. From Connemara lamb and farmhouse cheeses, to the freshest local seafood from the fishing villages that line the coast, Ireland’s chefs are turning out innovative, creative modern cooking and getting rave reviews. Wander around cobbled streets of Temple Bar all the way to the long-established Gallagher’s Boxty House and tuck into their signature Boxty pancakes. For fine fare, head to Ireland’s only two star Michelin, Restaurant Patrick Guilbaud, situated beside the 5-star Merrion Hotel.

3) Live, See, Breathe History: Travel through time to discover magical castles, majestic townhouses and squares, and magnificent museums and galleries. Explore the National Museum of Ireland to see examples of Celtic and Medieval Art, and discover the finest collection of prehistoric gold artifacts in Europe. At its heart, Dublin is a Viking city and its streets are an eclectic mix of the historic and contemporary. Take a walk around the city and you’ll stumble upon ancient history at every turn.

4) Explore City Parks: Explore some of the lushest green havens in the city. Plenty of hidden parks and waterways are dotted around the city. One of Europe’s largest enclosed city spaces, the Phoenix Park is a leafy oasis on the edge of Dublin city-centre. Home to Dublin Zoo, Farmleigh House and herds of beautiful wild deer, this expansive green getaway is well worth a visit.

5) Get Active: Travel east from Dublin to the Howth Peninsula for hiking routes that take you past Neolithic stone monuments and historic Viking ruins, and for great views of the rugged coastline and cliffs. Don’t be limited to purely cultural escapades, as the edges of Dublin are also known for attracting outdoor adventurers.

How to get there? – Both Etihad and Emirates offer double-daily flights to Dublin from Abu Dhabi and Dubai, respectively.
